2022年度 追試 第5問
Questions No. 27 to 32
Our focus today is on a tiny animal, the honeybee. Have you ever thought about how important they are? By flying from one plant to another, honeybees pollinate flowers and plants, which is an essential part of agricultural crop production worldwide. In fact, almost 35% of our global food production relies on honeybees, both wild and domesticated. To emphasize the importance of bees, in 2020, the United Nations designated May 20th as “World Bee Day.” Although honeybees are necessary for human life, they are facing serious challenges.
Wild honeybees have been at increasing risk of extinction. These honeybees and native flowering plants depend on each other for survival, but the natural habitats of wild honeybees are being destroyed. Factors such as climate change and land development are responsible for this loss, leaving these wild honeybees without their natural environments.
Domesticated honeybees are kept and managed by farmers called beekeepers for the production of honey. In recent years, the number of domesticated honeybees has been on the decline in many countries. Issues including infectious diseases and natural enemies are making it very difficult to sustain beekeeping. How to deal with these issues has been a concern for beekeepers around the world.
What can be done to maintain these honeybee populations? For wild honeybees, we can grow a variety of bee-friendly plants that bloom in different seasons in order to provide them with healthy habitats. For domesticated honeybees, beekeepers can make use of technological advances to create safer environments that will protect their bees. By improving natural habitats and managing honeybees properly, we can ensure the survival of not only our important friend, the honeybee, but ourselves as well.
