Today I’m going to introduce the most popular Italian restaurant in town. It’s called Alfredo’s and everyone goes there. You’d better go early if you want to get a table. Or else you could go after the dinner rush — any time after 9:00. But a lot of the popular dishes might be sold out by then. So, the earlier the better. If you go during the dinner hour, you’ll probably have to wait an hour or more to get a table.

I definitely need a new pair of tennis shoes, and if I have any money left, I think I’ll buy a CD. I heard that Elton John’s new one is really great. Oh, wait a minute. I just remembered. I’ve got to buy a new pair of sunglasses instead.

Some of you may wonder what you can do to help save the environment. I think the most important thing is to reuse or recycle things. We should avoid using things once and then throwing them away. According to statistics, the average household in Japan uses 8.4 shopping bags per week. Altogether, many thousands of tons of paper and plastic bags are thrown away in Japan in one year. This has become a big problem because they are generally used only once but it takes a lot of energy and resources to make them. Imagine how different things would be if everyone started to carry their own cloth bags when they go shopping. Let me give you another example. Every day in the United States, Americans buy 62 million newspapers, and more than 70% of them are thrown away. That equals far too many trees! Japanese buy more than 100 million newspapers daily. More than 50% of them are recycled, but millions of newspapers are still thrown away every day. If both countries concentrate on better ways to recycle their newspapers and other paper products, not only will we help save the environment, but the total amount of garbage will also be reduced.
